ASHTAMUDI
Ashtamudi is actually the name of the famous lake flowing through the district of Kollam. Ashta means eight and mudi means strand. So it means the lake has eight branches or it separates into eight tributaries. The lake is the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and is about 71 kilometres north of Thiruvananthapuram.
The city of Kollam through which the Lake Ashtamudi runs is an old port and also the land of cashew nuts. It was once a well-known trading hub and one of the busiest spice trade centres. Ashtamudi covers 31% of this historic town and is an eternal presence in the topography of the place.
